This cat came in with a chronic history of urinary tract infections. UTI’s are very common in our feline friends and can be difficult to diagnose and cure. All too often, we can manage these cases but never achieve a cure. This is due to multiple issues including the inability to confirm crystals or “bladder sand”. This cat had been radiographed with no luck in finding the underlying issue that was causing the problem. We decided to perform an abdominal ultrasound in an attempt to diagnose this cats problem. On ultrasound, we noted the animal had a large amount of crystalline material in the bladder. These crystals will irritate the interior wall of the bladder and cause severe UTI’s. This animal was treated for the sand and resolution of the problem was achieved. See the ultrasound images below.
